Yay or Nay? 2015's Trends and Shockers (Part 2)

1/28/2016 7:37:46 PM

It’s been a roller-coaster ride (as always) as long as the Earth revolves in a 365-day stretch. From January 1 to December 31, we here in the Philippines have seen a lot of a sudden turn of events which leads us into various perspectives as we see it.

With that being said, here are some of the top news which may or may have been shocked us, trended more in our consciousness list, and moreover left an impact on out intellectual side of life.

DOTC secreatry Abaya once said “traffic is not fatal” and also, MRT is safe.

Well, in the society where everyone can be really matiisin at times, yeah right. But are sticking ourselves to that kind of mud? This ain’t dark ages, people. This issue can be really depressing. And though MRT mishaps aren’t comparable to match the disastrous railways systems in India, I think the former has really caught up on his period, plus the maintenance contracts were such an unfortunate business to deal with. Ouch.

Nay.

Well, traffic is not fatal? I mean, really? Perhaps he’s talking about it as a whole; but what about the protest by the popular religious sect here in the country? There are reports that it claimed one life after being stuck on traffic -- an in the middle of supposedly emergency.

I think either you have to be careful on speaking with the press or hire some speech proofreaders.

Finally, he ran. The hope for this country to rise above corruption (sorry, WWE and John Cena) is back!

The question: really?

I’m afraid that Duterte’s name is at stake because of his bunch of naggers supporters here and abroad. I get it, I liked him as a political personality. But maybe -- on the deeper side of life -- he’s had enough of being tagged to the presidential race that he decided to be in contrast to his previous statements of declining.

As much as I admire him, its a nay for me. P.S. Anyone who dares to threat people who stands against his decision to run should meet his untimely death soon. Fuck you, guys.

The word war between Mar Roxas and Rodrigo Duterte. Yes, and I called it word war because both of these 2016 presidential candidates are just keep on talking about each other.

I might get it that this can be another marketing startegy from the Davao City mayor himself whose been continuously nagged by his supporters to run for the country.

But will the two of you grow the fuck up?

Seven Hours

1/22/2016 7:48:03 PM

What can you do in seven hours?

A very personal question that might be easily sounding to answer, but it actually wasn’t.

Imagine doing household chores for example? Unless you were trained to do so, I think seven hours will be very complete thing to clean your house.

Seven hours. What can you do in seven hours? Or 420 minutes; near one-third of a day; or let’s just simply say 25,200 seconds?

Unless you were born a lazy bastard, you might accomplish nothing. Imagine seven hours of doing nothing. I mean, literally. Either you might be happy on that kind of set-up or you will lose your sanity the same way you lost your virginity during puberty stage. Heck, that could even produce a hundred rounds of a combat sport event; and even an uncountable rounds of sex.

Seven freaking hours. Perhaps you might have written a part of a novel right there; or at least ran a half-season marathon of The Walking Dead, or watched two WWE pay-per-views or three NBA regular-season games. Or maybe, listened to at least 144 songs (assuming each runs for at least 3.5 minutes) and three and a half 90-minute podcast -- I wish your ears weren’t bleeding as fuck though especially if you’re wearing your favorite headset.

Seven hours. What on earth can you do for seven hours?

Make your mother proud?

Wage an advocacy?

Or maybe...

Is it enough to know someone else? Is it quite ample to engage yourself into at least a friendly conversation -- or better yet, romantically?

As they say, some things happened so good that whatever time they had in store seems to come up short. Admit it, folks. There were circumstances where you already had a good time only to realized the show already reached its culminating part.. And too bad, it doesn’t matter if you want more.

But maybe that could start a spark, you know what I’m saying? Like... A continuation.

You’re lucky if your date reached seven hours. That simply means either two things: traffic in Manila sucks big time that it paved you to do something worthy, or to sum it up: you’re not a boring person at all. As if you wanted to talk to that lady or gentleman for more. You like to interact with her more often.

Yes, it could be a spark like an old High School Musical track -- start of something new. While you can also argue it could spell doom to several agendas in life, I can only retaliate by uttering a question: Why would you spend seven hours on being a badass and destroying a lot of matters? You can do that on a shorter span of time.

What can you do on seven hours?

Maybe, if you believe on that most-argued concept, that would make a start of your “forever.”

And maybe, that might be enough to fuel somebody’s spirit. Not necessarily to change a life in an instant.

It could make you fall for something that is worth falling for.

Moreover, it could make a person love somebody. If you know what I mean. :)

Flick Review: Lakbay2Love

1/30/2016 5:40:04 PM

Of all the stories of the romance-driven (at at times, oligarchs) movie industry, Lakbay2Love tells a formula involving stories about searching for answers on self, romance, and for the changing times in our environment. Raising bars on consolidating multiple subplots and conflicts in the process.

Despite the stocks formed in between, the picture had a very light approach, with multiple breath-taking scenery serving as their backdrops, and a very interesting storlyline.

Lianne is a videographer whose dilemmas in the past, especially on her romance affair, has yet to be resolved with mounting paychecks also haunting her daily life. A new project made her fall in love with another world -- biking; but her trail never stops as she, along with Jay-R, explored other sides of the world; from the harsh, dying reality of our environment, to the fun times of using bicycles and even getting back.

Somehow, the cinematography become a primary factor on how Lakbay2Love find found its balance. I mean let's face it: the aesthetic appeal set the flick's tone for most of the time; plus the soundtrack complimented them all, with Kai Honasan's Liwanag serving a fitting pace. Plus, Solenn's Kilig and a cover of The Eraserhead's Overdrive joining the mix -- and even became the background music of its trailer.

Though most people would think the love story became a standout, I still don’t think the advocacy was far left behind. It stood alongside the triangular affair which shied away from the typical resolution; considering where love triangle stories usually conclude.

Besides, the issue of biking and climate change was so evident despite its absence in the news circulation. This film exhibited awareness about the said topics; something that was rarely seen.

Not totally perfect, but definitely a worth the watch, especially if you’re into biking; and looking for solutions to the never-ending traffic and even pollution cases.

Verdict: 7.2

Yay or Nay? 2015's Trends and Shockers (Part 1)

Papal Visit. After months of being the talk of the town, this is it. Pope Francis gave Filipinos a visit for the first time since the late Pope John Paul II in the World Youth Day of 1995. It was memorable due to his visit at the Haiyan-strucked (local: Yolanda) Leyte. On top of that, several candid moments with the Catholic’s top leader were also became hot topics.

Yay.

The massacre in Mamasapano where 44 members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) group were killed in a series of ambush attacks at the town in Maguindanao. Additional insult to injury where the absence of its commander-in-chief during one key moment of their necrological services.

Nay. Who wants to hear bad news about a police or soldier whose life was spared as part of their “call of duty” -- that is to serve and protect each and every constituent. As for this case, peace and order while the Bangsamoro Basic Law was still a debate to deal with?

And another nay for being missing in action. And will you please choose your words carefully? That ain’t pretty.

Terrorism attacks on Paris.

Nay. Because unless if you’re sadistic bitch, no one wants to be part of casualty of another man-made catastrophe.

But would it be nice if we acknowledge and condemn the other terrorist attacks around the globe? It doesn’t happen on Paris alone. And the problem is media was being selective on recognition. It’s discrimination at the same time. So that’s another yay and nay because FUCK THE MEDIA!

AlDub phenomenon. It all started on an experiment that clicked not just for the Philippine masses watching Eat Bulaga, but also from its viewers abroad. Their episodes seemed a bit different from those teleseryes and each one of them made it on the trending lists of Twitter both nationwide and worldwide.

Yay for the content, but nay for being over-rated.

The Scene Around: Silakbo MV Launch

1/17/2016 1:14:10 PM

There are so many gigs during Saturday, 16 January 2015. You have the rescheduled Rakrakan Festival at Circuit Makati, Terno Inferno at the famous SaGuijo, and a cover night that served as a prelude for an upcoming concert by the trio of Bullet Dumas, Ebe Dancel, and Johnoy Danao.

And also, there’s a music video launch for the upriser called MilesExperience, and it was held at Mow’s bar in Quezon City.

The show started quite on time with Maude being the first act. Then, December Avenue also came to join the party, instant fire-hazard place in the process. Well, if we're talking about the crowd and the atmosphere inside.

Things got even rowdy wild as fuck when popular names also hit the stage to perform: Tanya Markova, Autotelic, Ourselves the Elves, and Jensen and the Flips. It was actually the first time I watched Tanya Markova live, though it was kinda short-lived since they will also be performing for Rakrakan Festival later that evening. But hey, the moment was worth it after years of hearing the likes of Picture Picture, Disney and Linda Blair on the airwaves.

Plus, they are back with an album and two music videos directed by Jiggy Gregorio.

Then, came another highlight moment of the game: the music video itself, which depicted the UST-laden band into some sorts of outburst and extremities. Perhaps, you better check their music video on video channels like MYX very soon!

I can’t prejudge the other happenings, but if we're talking about indie scene here, I can tell that Silakbo topped the evening either. It’s not just about having heavyweight shits on the night’s roster of musicians; but witnessing the ocean of people inside and outside Kowloon House’s underground bar gave me one thing in mind: that’s the support for the music. Imagine having 350-450 people in attendance. Guido (their keyboardist) even told me all the 400 printed tickets they have during the gathering was totally sold out. Tim (their drummer) noted it exceeded the bar guarantees way more than expected (I suspected that’s somewhere between 300-400%).

While the air conditioning unit was a downisde (taking photos on a low light can be another, but that’s what makes Mow’s bar an intimate place on live music), it can never outnumbered a lot of good stuff that happened during the night.

With that being said, congratulations to MilesExperience for a very successful event. Hope the success will paved an even longer way for you guys in the independent music scene.

Also, shoutouts to the creative director of 9Roots and the man behind Love Supreme and Sikalbo music videos Mr. Jiggy Gregorio. Nice meeting you during the evening.

Playback: Jensen and The Flips - Dangerous

1/22/2016 7:17:21 PM

Perhaps it’s no surprising why Jensen and the Flips were one of the notable names in the scene right now. You got a talented musician in Jensen Gomez himself, plus you add a people who can do baby-making music in such a very impressive mixture of soul, alternative, rhythm and blues, and even Motown pop.

Their 2015 album Honeymoon proved them all. And imagine having four singles to date; that includes their latest one called Dangerous.

Quite funny; the music video may have shown glimpses of those not-so-gory torture yet-a bit fun scenes. Like a tragedy-wannabe out of revenge a la Fifty Shades of  Grey (wait, not even close but there's still glimpses anyway) amidst sensuality.

But certainly, the song is something you like for a slowdown atmosphere, especially on Sunday nights where either romantic ballads or those rnb playlist are filling your listening senses. It’s as sultry as it gets as if the dim candlelight is accompanying

I quite wonder, though, who’s the female-sounding vocal right there? It complimented so well that it reminded me of a bit-upbeat Make U Say by Sud -- Sexually arousing as fuck. (no dirty pun intended)

Just My Opinion: WWE Royal Rumble 2016

1/25/2016 12:08:17 PM
The 2016 WWE Royal Rumble has just got more royalty with its new logo and presentation, though of course the stage set-up still sucks since Payback 2014. But hey, I think we are about to be treated in a special storyline presenting the current poster boy Roman Reigns.

Well, I kinda wonder: this should have been made earlier since WrestleMania 2015. But anyway...

Last Man Standing appeared to be a catastrophic match to kick off Royal Rumble. And it delievred though of course, it’s not as perfect as it is. Hardcore duel between Dean Ambrose and Kevin Owens proved to be not a bad thing to kick off a pay-per-view event though it can’t topped how The Usos and Dolph Ziggler performed against their adversaries in the previous WWE PPV events.

That perhaps the way to serve an ending to this brutal feud. And who knows? Dean might have another IC feud and with a potential guy to pass the torch on; like a heel turn for Dolph Ziggler.

As for Owens, another story at works; like his dream match with Brock Lesnar soon. Or maybe, a Sheamus route.

The Verdict: 7.9

The New Day has successfully defended their tag team championships, and a new trombone in addition. Perhaps their match with the Usos has been at the least predictable by plot. I mean, sure, The Usos can have their golds for the third time; but maybe it’s another young-vs.-elder type of match.

But you have to love how Big E end this battle.

With that being said, I think The New Day will lose the titles by WrestleMania. Yeah, looks like I figured out where this one will go; the only problem: they have where will be the next tag team champs with Sin Cara of the Lucha Dragons out in sick bay?

Well, we’ll never know.

The Verdict: 8.1

Kalisto had a very brief turnaround to snatch the United States Championship from Alberto Del Rio. Though it doesn’t sounds really convincing; considering the former has taken tons of punishment from the latter.

But hey, this might do something good for both men; Kalisto as a singles competitor who can be a standout luchador in WWE since Rey Mysterio and Los Matadores, and Del Rio as part of the heel (the ally of the Authority) faction League of Nations.

The Verdict: 7.3

Charlotte retains her Diva’s championship in perhaps a clearer vision: a devilish fashion. More evil than ever.

Okay, you might argue: we have seen a lot of that recently. But this showed more darkness this time with Becky Lynch almost taking home the precarious victory until Ric Flair threw his blazer; an obvious sign of a flamboyant name with a dirty game on it.

Hey, the Boss is in the house! Sasha Banks is perhaps presenting herself for a title picture. And eliminating Becky Lynch out of it. I thought I was partially wrong on one second as they were appearing to rehash their BFF tales on NXT.

But god, no. Ugly match, but a more dirtier-yet-prettier aftermath.

Verdict: 6.9

And so was the biggest battle of WWE so far this year. And perhaps, the biggest one should WrestleMania and SummerSlam matches went into fluke soon.

Now, were talking Royal Rumble match in some kind of different manner. For the first time, since 1992, the WWE title will be at stake. And it’s literally a Roman Reigns story: one versus all. At least this didn’t happen at the battle royale at WrestleMania.

But fuck it, can he really handle it all with six former world champions -- and some of them were Royal Rumble winners (Sheamus, Brock Lesnar, Alberto Del Rio) -- also joining the frey?

He has to win his second straight RR match, something we haven’t seen since Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1998. That could be really a daunting task on being an underdog (a big top dwag) against the Authority, with a bunch of international villains (League of Nations), a bizzarre buzzards (The Wyatt Family), and a beast incarnate (Brock Lesnar). And the fact that he’s the first man to enter the contest itself.

Can he really deliver without any unconvincing manner? Consdiering he’s on his home turf at Florida, and the fact that his WWE career started here at NXT (also, at Florida).

Now talk about conspiracy theories, let’s get on the match itself. Here are the sidenotes that I should have been made on a liveblog basis.

So, Rusev became the second competitor. Interesting, since he’s the last one eliminated last year. And just like that he’s eliminated again after a second-rope-and-drive by surprise..

AJ Style returns! Jesus Christ! The wrestling’s hottest free agent made it to WWE! Imagine the 18-year veteran whose been an international name tussling with the top dog! This is hard to deal with considering WWE has been planning to build Reigns as their top man. Now he’s earning jeers again. Shades of 2015.

Tyler Breeze enters the picture. But it doesn’t really seems impressive. How on earth?!

Wait, the Social Outcast is here. And Curtis Axel finally enters the Royal Rumble! But it all boils down to Styles and Reigns again as he was formally eliminated. Save your Axlemania to Recycle Bin. Hahaha!

Chris Jericho has done it again, His ninth. What else is new, actually? I think these two veterans could school Roman!

And here enters the legendary Kane. And not a corporate guy but a devil Kane. Another Royal Rumble class is at works, and a fatal-four is at set-up.

Okay, I might be wrong: four teachers are ganging up for the title, and for the young champ, with Goldust entering the picture; his 11th participation. However, if there’s one thing that’s lacking it’s the fact that they’re not really aiming for Roman, the title.

Did recess came early? Ryback enters the Royal Rumble, and it’s feeding time. Perhaps, a should’ve WWE champ, and considering a young gun too.

And another Royal Rumble favorite, Kofi Kingston. Favorite in a sense that he has done extraordinary moments. He should have earned the title Mr. Royal Rumble but unfortunately he hadn’t even won a single Royal Rumble match. How tough is that?

Titus O Neil, and another homecourt advantage. But uhm, let’s see how it goes, with Roman and Styles at stake again.

And another comic guy in R-Truth. What’s he’s doing? This ain’t a ladder match, pal! This ain’t WWE Money in the Bank 2014? Now that gives Kane another addition to his records; but hey, Kofi Kingston had his “saving grave” moment again with the New Day at his side. Talk about unifying the unicorns right there!

So, the bizzarre moment has entered the atmosphere with Luke Harper being the 13th entrant for the Royal Rumble. But, with League of Nations -- plus Mr. McMahon pulling Reigns from the bottom rope. Another twist in the conspiracy theories. But save the guy, he’s not technically eliminated from the match!

Stardust is entering the match, but seems the stage is not out there at the squared circle, with Rusev avenging the loss by splashing Reigns at the table. And there’s paramedics.

The Big Show. Another veteran at the Royal Rumble; and always a bridesmaid -- no gender pun intended.

And Neville on the halfway. And we’re on the roll again; while Reigns refused to be stretched out immediately. I guess he’s not formally eliminated as LoN pulled him from the bottom. Another flaw to this story, and are we seeing another botching end? Hopefully not.

Especially with the Brawn Strowman entering the picture. I wonder for a second: we might have seen a scuffle against each member sometime? We never know. But one thing for sure: this brute just eliminated two men. Can he reached Reigns number, or even Kane’s? We’ll never know.

Uh, oh! Just I have thought. Kevin Owens with a limping leg, but he’s still barely walking and it’s Fight Owens Fight time. And talk about reuniting with Styles, and eliminating him in the process! Yes, after 28 minutes! Now talk about being heel! Funny, how Luke even bade goodbye to AJ! Hey, you’re not on backstage, guy!

Ambrose is back and it’s revenge time anew! Hardcore time!

Oh, brother! Number 20 is Sami Zayn! And looks like we have the clash of the former best friend and eliminated him right there and then. We wish we could have seen more of this soon as the NXT chants roll. The only not fair in this cameo is his entrance screen. Crap!

Two thirds in the RR match, and nearly all the members of the Wyatt Family are complete with Erick Rowan. Now talk about domination like a 3-on-3 tag team tussle!

But just when you thought this match will be over, here comes another heavyweight shit in Mark Henry. But with his age? I doubt he will be winning at all, with all the Wyatt Family members eliminating him. Good luck to the rest!

Ohhhhh!!!! Brace Yourselves! The Beast is the Royal Rumble for the first time since 2003 and we’re on detour to Suplex City! And this seems a clash of the gigantic brutes like a 3-on-1 handicap match!

Now Jack Swagger enters the match, But too bad, his chance of making it was nothing but a fluke! Poor kid after winning the pre-show. While the carnage continues and changing the complexion of the match in the process; though it appears like off-timing. This is the physically challenging one I have seen in Lesnar.

While the Miz became the 25th entrant, it appeared he’s a cowardice by taking the headset and make it like he’s on another RAW episode. Does it appear special? Maybe. But heck, fuck it! This subplot is getting colorless.

And Del Rio goes back, and it’s a man-for-himself time! But is is just me or this match gets a little bit boring if we’re talking about numbers here! And Lesnar just took down the buzzards! But where’s Bray Wyatt?!

Speaking of the devil: and it appears he’s after the beast this time around! Good luck with that, boy! And just like that, another prelude to a potential rivalry is at works! Expect this one come Fastlane or WrestleMania! This sequence keeps me exciting, but not for long. A screwjob and again?! I need to see Lesnar explode like how Roman Reigns took Triple H out during TLC!

As Dolph Ziggler enters the stage; but the quality’s been already lost! How crap is that?! Miz enters and appears to be the smartest guy but only temporarily either!

Sheamus on his third RR match, and can he also pull off a victory? Hey, Reigns is back, with a Superman Punch! Shades of Axle-Rowan ‘15! And I am sensing another screwjob at works!

Oh, shit! Triple H! Just as I expected! Now I’m clapping out loud! Hey I saw it coming, guys! It may not be a total screwjob, but certainly he’s sending a message with a pedigree on DZ and a spear by Roman to Wyatt! Talk about prof-vs.-student! I think that salvaged this match for a bit.

And things are going heels vs babyface clearcut versions: Jericho, Ambrose, Sheamus, Hunter, and Reigns! And Jericho was the last man timed standing so far with 50 minutes! It’s kinda awry to see brothers trun soon!

And just like that: Reigns is eliminated! There’s a newwwwww champ at works! HHH at Ambrose remains last men standing! I’m sensing something new here, like passing a torch to his brother! New tale at hand, and perhaps a new swerve to Reigns story!

And for the 14th time, the WWE World Heavyweight champion is back at the hands of the Authority! Talk about revenge, and talk about showing domination. Like what they say, the Authority always wins!

The Verdict: 8.1

With that being said, we have seen a Roman empire crumble! And the King of Kings rose above them all. But I think the overall match fell flat for quite some time. But I know for a fact, this will build up something good for WrestleMania. It’s not that bad to hear Ro Moran’s words on his The SGP podcast! It may sound unpopular, but when you think about it, it’s better to see Reigns win the title again come WM32, something he failed to do so last year.

The Verdict (Overall): 7.5

The Scene Around: Revolution Baby Productions EP Night

1/10/2016 1:08:08 PM

I was supposed to hit by a gig last Friday night only to end up sleeping at the sick bay due to almost-a-week long colds. All that despite having invited by two Facebook friends at the indie scene.

This past Saturday, though not totally feeling well, still swing by Route 196 for an EP launch and at the same time, my first gig for 2016. And it’s called Revolution Baby EP night.

Five bands performed during the evening: The Espasouls, PAUL, Banna Harbera, Nick’s Son and The Anton Molina Project. Apart from Banna, it was actually the first time I heard these bands live. And more than I thought, The Espasouls (or are they previously named as Sammy and Friends?) was another band by Sammy Valenia, the entertaining back-up vocalist and guitarist from Jensen and the Flips. He also filled in Gelo Acosta’s shoes for SUD since the latter’s departure for studies at London.

Speaking of which, it was also the guy’s last gig before departing Manila once again. Ironically, the first time I heard him on his band.

At the end of the night, I got an EP which I have yet to listen as of writing time. Kinda interesting while I bow my head to my good friend Patrick Felipe. He’s the busiest guy of the night; playing for three bands on one evening (and luckily, on one venue)! Now talk about lagare!

The Scene Around: Kaleidoscope

12/27/2015 11:45:49 PM

Barely three months ago, after watching Heneral Luna at a mall in Manila, I decided to jump to another coast after seeing a poster containing some of my favorite bands in one night: Jensen and the Flips, The Ransom Collective, Cheats and even Anj Florendo. The event was situated at Mow’s bar, just at the basement of the famed Kowloon House branch at Matalino Street, Quezon City.

All for the weekend before Tagaytay Art Beat. But this one isn’t organized by any of the production groups I know. Certainly I have no idea who in the world is organizer. Heck, I wasn’t even aware it’s her then-birthday party, too. So it looked like I’m a heck-of-a-gatecrasher who shied away from the celebration and charity matters; and instead only wanting to listen to these awesome bands.

Man, it was also the first time I heard Anj on a literally soloflight and the band called Kombo Kombo. Not bad. Other musicians followed suit during that crazy night; and making Kaleidoscope the highest grossing gig at the bar.

Playback: Assembly Generals (ALBUM)

1/10/2016 2:48:03 PM

When my friend Ian of Vandals on the Wall once said 2015 was the year of the Philippine hip-hop, I won’t be surprised at all. And I’m not talking about who won FlipTop Isabuhay tournament here or how many chicks were added on Abra’s fans club.

Look: collaborations may have been increasing as well as the number of quality tracks released (those you would like to hear more often than those jeepney-appropriate “reeeeemixxxx!” songs). But moreover, a lot of albums were also out in the circulation, though not having much slots on your favorite record bars.

Besides, there’s Curtissmith, Ninno, BLKD, and even Zaito who just made waves through their songs; be it on physical records or through the likes of Spotify and Soundcloud.

Take the Assembly Generals for example. This aren’t just a crossover collab effort from Team Manila, Flying Ipis, Miscellaneous and andwich/Squid9/Pedicab. These four peeps may sound much better and livelier at their gigs; but hearing their album is worth the price.

The Php400-value Assembly Generals debut record comes with a embroided package and eight of the dopest tracks you will hear on the other side of hip-hop.

Kontrabida is an obvious favorite with a timely political and societal arguments inserted on the lyrics. But AG had more in store; tackling various talks with other notable hiphop heads collaborating with them like Skarm, and Dash.

Overall, if you’re a legit (and more legit) hip-hop head (not just those who likes digging to those “galawang breezy” tracks), Assembly Generals will get you geared up for action.May not be the very best record for the genre for 2015, but certainly part of the list.

Verdict: 8.5

The Scene Around: Heneral Luna DVD Launch

1/10/2016 9:36:06 PM

Following the success of its Heneral Luna, Artikulo Uno Productions held an event in cooperation with Megaworld Lifestyle Malls where everyone can now buy the copy of the movie in physical and original product.

Heneral Luna DVD launch had its second leg (the first one was held at Lucky Chinatown Mall a few days ago) on Sunday, 20 December 2015, at the Eastwood Central Plaza. Several cast members were present as well as the selected props used in the movie such as Apolinario Mabini’s chair and the uniform used by the soldiers.

Games were also made by the cast (Archie Alemania, Alex Medina) to entertain the audience; while later on Mon Confiado and Epy Quizon had an acting contest of its own. But nothing was more notable when Heneral Luna himself John Arcilla entered the podium and did his part.

Also, a forum portion was made where fans asked questions about the picture itself and several aspects that affects such.

To cap the evening, the actors signed several movie posters, DVD copies, and even fan art memorabilia. Perhaps, the very fist time for yours truly to have an encounter with Arcilla; knowing I’ve been a fan of the actor’s showmanship since his portrayal at Metro Manila in 2013. It was also the first time for me to meet Mon Confiado whose known for doing antagonistic roles for most part of his acting career; and the second time to meet Quizon (the first one was during a gala night of a Cinema One Original a few months ago).

Perhaps, it will fall down as one of the best moments to remember 2015 for me, with the awesome movie.

The Scene Around: Mind Money Circuit EP Launch

12/19/2015 11:08:07 PM

I first remember Gab Palanca when they played at Docdef 93 last August 1 at SaGuijo in Makati City. Heck, he even played for Anj Florendo’s band a night before.

And just prior to attending, I was then-not quite sure if I will attend an event considering I’m facing a circumstance where I have to deal with priorities. (Adult duties, you know?)

And four months after, they had their EP launch at Mow’s bar in Quezon City.

Well, just in time when I get back from the indie music scene at the time where I actually scored this thing called ‘laptop.’ Wohooo! Christmas is indeed here, ladies and gentlemen!

In the lineup, Devices, Dearest, Tom’s Story and Farewell Fair Weather also performed for the evening where everyone was at holiday spirit thanks to holiday sales and awesome events happening that evening.

And this is quite the second time I am hearing Mind Money Circuit though the very first on quite in-depth basis considering I’m a total newbie to the post and math rock genre.

Inside the Pages: Heneral Luna The History Behind the Movie

12/29/2015 11:15:48 AM

Book-to-movie adaptations is undeniable part of the pop culture right now. An entire book translated into a single screenplay (or a series of screenplays) that was perhaps not just a culture norm of entertainment, but a marketing tool to a merchandise is so evident that people usually generates array of feedbacks regarding to it.

And rarely would an entertainment arm go from a movie-to-book adaptation like Heneral Luna. Though this book, titled Heneral Luna: The History Being the Movie, is not just a follow-up sequel to it success; but a piece of chunk for history aficionados -- be it legit or wannabes.

If several historians are telling only a side of our contemporary and revolutionary tale of accounts, perhaps Ria Limjap’s interview with Dr. Vivencio R. Jose will break the stereotype of what has been a series of misconceptions about a temperamental general.

The author of The Rise and Fall of Heneral Luna bared it all. His journey from breaking the first impression, into searching for facts unknown to many, to formally authoring the 1972 book, were all discussed in a three-hour monograph held 13 April 2015 at the National Museum of the Philippines.

From there, Dr. Jose told not just Limjap, but also the book readers that Luna wasn’t just a very hot-headed guy who piloted the Philippine army into series of wars until his tragic death on 1899. He was more of a general, scientist, journalist, artist, and even an ordinary folk. Antonio is just one of the few Filipinos who can walk the talk. I mean, he really got the brawls aside from having a sharp mouth.

And his conspiracy theory-driven demise ignited Philippines’ downfall anew.

Well, if you’re a fanatic of the movie, I highly suggest do your research very well by adding this book into your collection.

Heneral Luna: The History Behind the Movie is a book comprised of Ria Limjap’s interview with Dr. Vivencio R.. Jose, author of The Rise and Fall of Heneral Luna, a book first published by the University of the Philippines in 1972, and reprinted by Solar Publishing Corporation in 1991.

Heneral Luna: The History Behind the Movie is published and distributed by Anvil Publishing, Inc., with three printings made by July, August, and October 2015.

The Scene Around: DOCDEFY III

1/10/2016 8:26:54 PM

Docdef Productions celebrated their 3rd anniversary with a gig that is quite a fitting one to cap 2015. Most of the best and up-and-coming musicians performed at Docdefy III happened 29 December 2015 at Route 196 in Quezon City.

Alasmedya kicked off the party; while others in the ten-band lineup followed suit. Namely, Austin, Banna Harbera, SUD, Jensen and the Flips, Autotelic, MilesExperience and Maya’s Anklet. And UBE was the last band to cap Docdefy III, while also claiming that it will also be their last outing before they go on hiatus.

With that being said, it was a heck-of-a-year for the Jack Daniel’s Prod of the Year awardee. Since its inception on December 2012, Docdef Productions produced more than 100 gigs in total; with this year includes a variety of happenings such as the following:
  • EDGES (18 February, Route 196 with Fringe MNL)
  • Farewell Fair Weather’s anniversary and home-returning gig (29 January and 18 June, respectively at Route 196)
  • Days 1-4 of the Satchmi Record Store Week (13-16 April, SM Megamall)
  • Magnify (23 May, UP Town Center)
  • #FeteIndie2015 (20 June, 12 Monkeys Music Hall and Pub with Vandals on the Wall and NDFY.ME)
  • Light Settling (18 August, Route 196 with UP Underground Music Society; previous title: When The Light Settles)
  • Tagaytay Art Beat (19 September, Museo Orlina)
  • In D’ Flow (28 November, Flow House Manila)
So here’s to more good music and happenings, Docdef Productions!

Weeknights to Remember: SlickMaster's Memorable Gigs of 2015 (Part 2)

12/31/2015 3:00:36 PM

The post was supposed to be named Fridays and Saturday Nights to Remember only to realized a few things: first, gigs are happening every single weeknight; second, most of them aren’t even planned by yours truly to attend; and third, I have been to almost 70 gigs for 2015.

2015 has been a heck of a good year for me as I discovered Philippine music anew -- and it broods at the place where minority of people knows -- the independent scene. Over the course of time, I attended about 50 events starting from a random night out that happened 24 January 2015 at Route 196. I was then supposed to watch my college friend whose already a musician.

And since then, the Philippine independent music scene became another world conquered by yours truly. I became part of a production group; I was posting anything about gigs for most of the time; and indie music also served as a venue for me to grow as opportunities came from out of nowhere -- be it writing or anything else like photography and videography.

Fast-forward to the year-end, despite attending the last one or two music events of this year from small-time gigs to the big or concert-level ones, I can say I had a lot of memorable evenings.

Farewell Fair Weather: Beyond (18 June 2015 / Route 196 / Docdef Productions)

Just three years young in the industry, Farewell Fair Weather seemed they had a comeback gig like a veteran. Well, fresh from winning the Jack Daniel’s Chosen One and being part of Music Matters in Singapore, FFW was indeed back with emphasis!

The crowd inside during the set of The Ransom Collective
Kaleidoscope (12 September 2015 / Mow’s Bar / Mika Ordonez)

Held a week before Art Beat, and just in time after having a great Saturday afternoon (I watched Heneral Luna before heading to Mow’s). Hearing the likes of Anj Florendo, Jensen and the Flips, The Ransom Collective and Cheats are somewhat good enough to make my evening. Plus I also heard Kombo Kombo for the first time right there; and I heard Kaleidoscope was the highest grossing gig set at the bar located just at the basement floor of Kowloon House. With its proceeds went to the operation of a certain kid named Jillian.

Damn nice!

Oh, Flamingo
Oh, Flamingo! EP launch (14 October 2015 / Route 196 / Oh, Flamingo)

Barely joining the “Sa Tamang Panahon” bandwagon, Oh, Flamingo! first launched their event on Facebook page. And it appeared like almost half-a-thousand clicked GOING with barely a month left.

It may not reached the exact number, but certainly it topped the gate attendance at Route 196. Plus the stage was elevated, with a kiddie birthday theme as the peg. All that with Sandwich’s Raimund Marasigan doing a crowd surf doing their set.

Kinda impressive, considering this band was-then poised to win the Wanderband contest two weeks later!

Maya's Anklet
Light Settling [Prev. Title: When The Light Settles] (18 August 2015 / Route 196 / Docdef Productions, UP Underground Music Society)

An evening where subtle music ruled Route 196 as Maya’s Anklet, TheSunManager, and Autotelic launched their music videos as part of a Ballet Philippines’ short film project.

Not just that, the last band who performed during that evening shed light as they turned their set into a wild, crazy moshpit session.

MilesExperience
MilesExperience Thanksgiving Gig (19 August 2015 / Mow’s Bar / MilesExperience)

Fresh from a successful music video launch a month ago, the boys from MilesExperience gave thanks to everyone by setting up a thanksgiving gig, with more louder bands performing right beforehand; a bit of shying away from the slow and sexy drive.

Ebe Dancel
Amplifiied (11 July 2015 / Route 196 / Amplify.PH)

Amplify.PH’s second anniversary as a start-up, with executives baring their new motives of going beyond; more than just a sound which tackles news, interviews and features about the local music scene. An evening where different genres of music converged. It was the first time I heard Cog, and A Problem Like Maria.

Anj Florendo
You Are Here: Anj Florendo Album Launch (31 July 2015 / Route 196 / Anj Florendo)

Two months after encountering her and her music, Anj Florendo launched another record after three years -- this time, an album with more #hugot tracks. It was a Friday evening where it was all slow flow with the likes of Conscious and the Goodness, Matteo Escueta and MilesExperience sharing the stage.

Pastilan, Dong!
Seismos: A Post-Rock and Math Rock Appreciation Night (2 May 2015 / SaGuijo / Seismos)

Very first event for Imee Malabonga’s crew who advocates post-rock and math-rock tracks. Also, a very successful crowd-funded gig as Glen Macadaeg reiterates; with spoken word artists from Words Anonymous taking the stage in-between setup and soundcheck spots.
