From Puns to Fun

3/18/2016 9:50:07 PM

On an ordinary Friday where a lot of us are expecting weekend to come -- plus the fact that we got tangled in the middle of summer heat due to a fire drill, let me tell you a story.

Well, that crashed my momentum so much that I ended up browsing a lot of feeds on Twitter by lunch time. And presto... ended up browsing a series of funny posts made by one of my friends at the independent music scene.

Meet Carlo Lava, one of the guitarists of the rocker group called Lions and Acrobats. On top of that, he is also a member of other bands around this culture, and a chief engineer of one of a popular recording studio.

Interesting enough, I approached the fella; knowing he could make his array of witty posts a worthy discussion. I initially put a hashtag called #BandPuns, but it was better when Ling decided to put on #LocalBandPuns as it gives a much-needed specification and identity on which to tackle. And obviously, it’s all about our own.

This #localbandpuns thing turned out so well it gave a lot of music listeners -- and artists themselves -- some time to take a chill pill on a scorching hot afternoon.

Here are some of the responses we just gathered.

As we hit midway on Friday afternoon, this topic reached the fourth spot of the Philippine trending list on the popular micro-blogging site. And just when you thought people will slow down, #localbandpuns served like a hot freaking merienda as fans and bands like MilesExperience, Autotelic, Jensen and The Flips also joining the party!

Man, I had a mentally exhausted day, but checking upon the feed, it was an overwhelming response. To think this became the second most discussed talk on Twitter by 5:30 PM? Wow, this shows how music is a can make everyone relate, especially at the indies. So better think twice if the music scene is dying as fuck, because the locals may have been just punning around, but they already proved the argument otherwise.

Isn’t that great? I bet Ling was feeling a lot, lot, lot better! This hashtag was made by him and for him. And I'm honored that at some point, I managed to help someone's voice be heard... and big time!

Say, I might consider a career in social media, eh?

PlayBack: The Strangeness - Easy Boys and Easy Girls

2/29/2016 7:54:29 PM

I first heard them as part of that indie music program established and sponsored by a popular whiskey brand. They were listed track number 4 at the CD of Jack Daniel’s On Stage released on 2015.

The Strangeness is something I have never seen live; but one thing that impressed me most about them is they can make old school music sounded like new. The first thing I heard about them was a cover of my favorite Eagles song on YouTube.

But covers aside, Paolo Arcega and his crew was splendid in creating an Jose Mari Chan-inspired video for Easy boys and Easy Girls. Though this 3.5-minute length track had shades of that old Christmas In Our Hearts-quality image, The Strangeness shied away from being the obvious copycat. Like, their song is something you’d like to hear on when you drove out of the metro, be it on a breezy morning or a hot afternoon (well, as long as the rays are complimenting the auditory part well).

As much as the pop scene (specifically, the mainstream) winds back to its retrospect, the alt-rock scene can do so in their own way, to say the least. As tito music as it sounds, this is sometimes, what we need; we might have been missing them from those iconic groups we once heralded before.

Kinda strange, but right.

Upcoming: Farewell Fair Weather SAKALI Music Video Launch

3/11/2016 11:09:52 AM

Farewell Fair Weather, one of the top bands in the current music scene, is up for a big night as they will formally launch a music video for one of their notable songs Sakali.

The soul-fusion band, now on their fourth year of existence, has made waves through their previously released singles “Rough Skies,” “What Lies Behind” and “Beyond,” with the latter once rocked the charts of Jam 88.3’s Fresh Filter last year.

They also clinched the title distinction of being “The Chosen One” at the recent Jack Daniel’s Philippines On Stage Indie Music Awards held April 2015 at Makati City. From there, they had a chance to perform in front of a worldwide crowd at Music Matters in Singapore.

While Rough Skies signaled their first entering step via their signature, and Beyond told their journey since then, Sakali, once known as their only Filipino-written song, will tell a story of not just being an emotional force, but also a collaborating effort through director Mr. Melvin Dantes and its visual concepts; something that Mic Manalo describes as a fun-filled one.

As for the auditory part, Manalo and her company also got help from Josh Villena on making its new version, as reported by IndieManila.

The music portal also featured the event as the Gig Of The Month for March, with Autotelic, SUD, and Tom’s Story also performing during the evening. Farewell Fair Weather will also see their merchandise there.

Sakali Music Video Launch will be happening on Saturday, 12 March 2016, at 70s Bistro, Anonas Ave., Quezon City. Show starts at 8:00 PM. Entrance is priced Php200 which comes with one free shot of Jack Daniels. This event is made possible by Jack Daniel’s Philippines, eo+, Teamworks Studios,

Playback: MilesExperience – Down

03/03/2016 04:08:41 PM

Hearing MilesExperience as a novice-leveled listener and only having music channels and radio stations as your only resorts would only give you an impression of these: the bunch of gwapitos who can woo every kolehiyala with their music; and the band who made two melodramatic jazz-soul-alternative tracks whom sounded either sultry, taboo-defying, or sexy at will (Love Supreme and Silakbo).

But their newly-published Down is a different story. Though not as perfectly poetic as it gets, their words seemingly conveying a bunch of tornado-like twist and turns. Like a rocky-road manner of storytelling in a concrete planned emotional plot.

However, the execution in musical form is somewhat another thing. It's like a bold defiant to their previously-released singles: not exactly the sad lyrical work, but close to the exact “happy” song one can think about.

Though not as upbeat as Home, Down executes a different vibrancy that could hype up the crowd once you heard it... well, especially the live version; Imagine hearing shades of Beatles or those choir-like tunes for a stretch, thanks to the keyboard work of Guido Hizon; while Justin Teano's riff goes on another signature ride, yet retaining the sexy gestures he made from Love Supreme and Silakbo.

It looked like more of a classy mixture of jazz and funk, that sometimes I would even think of a gradual rising tension of climax somewhere out there and down by the later on.

And that being said, will suit better with a bottle of beer on one hand, while you're about cap the evening on a high note. Who knows? You might end up doing a little bit of head dance on its near-ending.

The Scene Around: Racc!oon

2/27/2016 7:39:47 PM

After a successful charity nightout four months ago, Mika Ordonez and her friends is back for another gig; with a bigger venue, heavier lineup, and a legitimate identity.

They are now called Raccoon Productions, and they debuted with formality and emphasis as they called their first gig RACC!OON!: A Charity Gig for Kythe Foundation.

Held on a Friday night (22 January 2016) at Route 196 in Quezon City, Racc!oon drew a typical soldout outing as they were able to raise funds enough to cover the expenses for their sponsored child named Ariana Soriano.

The four-year old beneficiary, whom hailed from Tarlac, is suffering from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia; but already had been undergoing her main chemotherapy cycles and will be on the verge of having two maintenance cycles which will run for two years.

Eight bands graced the evening: M.I.C., Indigo Sweep, Ang Bandang Shirley, Lions and Acrobats, Odayo, Jensen and The Flips, Tom’s Story and Flying Ipis.

In all the acts I have heard before, a debuting M.I.C. actually sounded new to me; as well as Odayo and Indigo Sweep. While the rest were instant crowd-drawers, specifically the math rock band whose then-about to launch their album in three years of existence.

Yes, Tom’s Story literally rocked the house down. Who am I not to remember that after seeing almost all spaces of the indoor Route being occupied? Damn good!

The night turned out so well for the debuting production firm as they had 300 paying customers and collated a total of Php 83,000 on donation, enough to cover the needed expenditures on Ariana’s way to recovery.

To read more about the Racc!oon Productions, check out the article by Radio Republic. Also the ways to donate will be also seen there.

The Scene Around: Pour Out What’s Special

2/25/2016 4:58:58 PM

It’s been an evening comprised of sweetening taste buds, eargasm, and beautiful aesthetics as Novellino Wines, together with Docdef Productions and Fringe MNL brought you Pour Out What’s Special.

Fourteen musicians rocked the house down with delectable tunes to spice up the evening as Valentine’s Day approached by. Along the way, various visual artists flaunted their precious masterpieces on a gallery inside the winery; plus photography exhibits from young photographers Gab Pili and Darzi Pinga and live mural art made by Cinos and Doom.

Also, people were treated at the acoustic set outside where several balladeers serenade away on a breezy, lovely atmospheric night.

The Modern Playground jazzed up the stage as they kicked off Pour Out What’s Special. Coeli San Luis and The Benjamins followed suit with a sultry mixture of strings. Perhaps a refreshing start as the sun goes down.

TheSunManager, Alasmedya, and Reese Lansangan graced the evening with bunch of their indie-pop acoustics; thus, setting a different vibrant inside the venue: slow and chill.

As we hit midway through the evening, things are gradually rising as Fools and Foes, Banna Harbera MilesExperience, Tom’s Story, and Farewell Fair Weather spiced them up further with their delectable tunes of indie folk, pop alternative, math rock, and various combinations of genres and angst-defiant lyrical work.

While the night’s getting late, The Ransom Collective just get this party started as they play their high-vibrant kind of indie folk pop. Sud, on the other hand, jazzed up the sexy way with live tracks of their own; and Jensen and The Flips served the hottest music to date as they delivered various kinds of pop alternative, sending the audience into an instant moshpit session.

With the turnout of the event, Pour Out What’s Special proved that art forms and social drinking can sit well with each other as the Philippine-made wide and the Philippine local indie scene have one thing in common: made out of great quality.

And with the advent of the demographics a the indie scene where the younger generation are quite indulged with it’s not that hard to see the convergence of wine, arts and music having a beautiful outcome; thus, resulting into a unique-but-great event.

Give Ipis A Chance to Fly High at SXSW 2016!

02/24/2016 01:01:59 PM

Photo from their Facebook page

For once, I heard their name as a plain innocent soul who knew nothing yet. And at the time I hit the music on the bar scene, I realized it's no surprise they literally rock everyone. Why did I say so?

'Cause I'm a fan. All that despite having a name which neutralizes every single “tunay na lalake.” (pun intended though)

Barely two months ago, this band of femme fatale-swaggin' punk rockers named Flying Ipis announced on their Facebook page about earning a slot to perform at South by Southwest Festival 2016 (SXSW), one of the biggest festivals in the US featuring music, film, and interactive media. It will be held at Austin, Texas on 11-20 March 2016.

Perhaps all their hardwork, from their all-girl Catholic school roots to the biggest stage, paid off big time. Imagine how the music of this all-girl quartet of Deng Garcia (vocals), Ymi Castel (lead guitars), Gaki Azurin (drums), and Tanya Singh (bass guitar) earned them two records (The Flying EP in 2009 and Give Ipis A Chance, in 2011), acclaimed singles (Ssikreto, Past is Past, Bitch!, Lundagin Mo, Beybi!, and This Song Is Not About You), and massive respect from the peers and fans.

They fronted for several international acts Japandroids and Metric; as well as sharing the stage with other music-makers on the grandest gigs like Fete Dela Musique, Oktoberfest, JACK TV Mad Fest, and Jack Daniel's Indie Fest; and emerging as the runner-up to the JD On Stage Indie Music Awards on 17 April 2015.

That being said, they are needing funds—approximately four hundred thousand pesos—to get them there at Texas; that's in addition to their needed visa and related paper works! And they are doing it on a series of gigs for this stretch here at the metro.

As of this writing, Flying Ipis launched their campaign via “Pledge Night” at 12 Monkeys Music Hall and Pub in Makati City. Along the way, Read Between The Lions, The Buildings, Squid 9, and Slow Hello shared the evening to provide good music and much-needed support.

And by tonight, they will rock Makati once again as they staged B-Side for the fund-raising gig organized by Locked Down Entertainment, Vandals on the Wall, and Jack Daniel's Philippines; with a lot of acts to keep the night (and kickstart the Holiday Thursday) away such as Farewell Fair Weather, RJay Ty and Abra, Imago, Cheats, Assembly Generals, Peryodiko, We Are Imaginary, and Paranoid City joining them.

And just before they cross coast, there will be a send-off gig at SaGuijo by early March. (lineup to be announced.)

For more information, check out the crowdfunding site artisteconnect.com and see how you can help the quartet reach US and rock the SXSW stage. Aside from corporate sponsorships, there are also Flying Ipis merchandise available at a very affordable pirce, including a shirt designed by Rob Cham!

Weeknights to Remember: SlickMaster’s Memorable Gigs of 2015 (Part 3)

12/31/2015 3:00:36 PM

The post was supposed to be named "Fridays and Saturday Nights to Remember" only to realized a few things: first, gigs are happening every single weeknight; second, most of them aren’t even planned by yours truly to attend; and third, I have been to almost 70 gigs for 2015.

2015 has been a heck of a good year for me as I discovered Philippine music anew -- and it broods at the place where minority of people knows -- the independent scene. Over the course of time, I attended about 50 events starting from a random night out that happened 24 January 2015 at Route 196. I was then supposed to watch my college friend whose already a musician.

And since then, the Philippine independent music scene became another world conquered by yours truly. I became part of a production group; I was posting anything about gigs for most of the time; and indie music also served as a venue for me to grow as opportunities came from out of nowhere -- be it writing or anything else like photography and videography.

Fast-forward to the year-end, despite attending the last one or two music events of this year from small-time gigs to the big or concert-level ones, I can say I had a lot of memorable evenings.

EDGES (21 February 2015 / Route 196 / Docdef Productions, FRINGE MNL)

Music and arts converged at the time of celebrating another holiday known as the Chinese New Year as photograph exhibitions were slated at Route 196’s Jack Room. Plus selected art pieces were also for sale, and live digital art was made during the sets of Tom’s Story and Autotelic. Truly a night to remember from a collaborative effort from Docdef Productions and FRINGE MNL.

Coeli San Luis
Elements Jam Night (4 May 2015 / Route 196 / Elements)

Two members of Alasmedya invited me to attend the jam night of the country’s leading songwriting camp. Explored the likes of The Benjamins, Coeli San Luis and Mic Llave right there. It might be an almost-stripped-down vibe Monday, but we all need this sometimes. Where you hear musicians jammed the night away with their peers. Thus saying, OPM is really alive in the process -- as artists showed their camaraderie to each other in terms of craft-making and having fun.

Mind Money Circuit
A Not-So-Silent Night: Mind Money Circuit EP Launch (19 December 2015 / Mow’s Bar / Docdef Productions)

Second time I have encountered this band. Perhaps that’s courtesy of Gab Palanca, whom once I crossed paths at SaGuijo, Route 196, and even SM City Marikina. And their EP launch proved they can offer more, and Math Rock is a genre rarely people would know.

Fools and Foes
Underneath The Roots: Fools and Foes EP Launch (4 December 2015 / SaGuijo / Docdef Productions, Revolver, The Rest is Noise)

I admit: I only knew two three songs right before their EP launch. Turns out they got five. And what makes it an evening to remember for me is that I was one of the people who manned their EP sales during the evening. Yes, I did so after attending iBlog11 up north and right before attending its second day. Totally busy, right?

John Ray Reodique of Alasmedya
Stripped (2 December 2015 / Route 196 / Route 196, Docdef Productions)

The first time I hit an all feel-good vibe gig at Route 196, with no hosts around, just organizers, musicians, and friends around. Stripped showcased the “other side” of each performer where they performed some of their band hits, personally-made covers, originals, or even seasonal tracks.

And since it happened on Christmas month, it’s quite obivous: each musician performed Christmas song. Now that’s a chillax way to greet everyone a “Merry Christmas!”

Kai Honasan w/ Josh Villena
Coffee Barn Session 2 (10 October 2015 / Coffee Barn / Gabi Na Naman Productions)

The first Coffee Barn Session happened on July was very successful. So, why not have a second coming, right? With popular guys like Kai Honasan, Aia De Leon, and Glaiza Castro headlining the all-acoustic night while you sip a coffee or bear on a full-house Coffee Barn at South Triangle, it was another notable Saturday night for your truly.

The Scene Around: Silakbo MV Launch

1/17/2016 1:14:10 PM

There are so many gigs during Saturday, 16 January 2015. You have the rescheduled Rakrakan Festival at Circuit Makati, Terno Inferno at the famous SaGuijo, and a cover night that served as a prelude for an upcoming concert by the trio of Bullet Dumas, Ebe Dancel, and Johnoy Danao.

And also, there’s a music video launch for the upriser called MilesExperience, and it was held at Mow’s bar in Quezon City.

The show started quite on time with Maude being the first act. Then, December Avenue also came to join the party, instant fire-hazard place in the process. Well, if we're talking about the crowd and the atmosphere inside.

Things got even rowdy wild as fuck when popular names also hit the stage to perform: Tanya Markova, Autotelic, Ourselves the Elves, and Jensen and the Flips. It was actually the first time I watched Tanya Markova live, though it was kinda short-lived since they will also be performing for Rakrakan Festival later that evening. But hey, the moment was worth it after years of hearing the likes of Picture Picture, Disney and Linda Blair on the airwaves.

Plus, they are back with an album and two music videos directed by Jiggy Gregorio.

Then, came another highlight moment of the game: the music video itself, which depicted the UST-laden band into some sorts of outburst and extremities. Perhaps, you better check their music video on video channels like MYX very soon!

I can’t prejudge the other happenings, but if we're talking about indie scene here, I can tell that Silakbo topped the evening either. It’s not just about having heavyweight shits on the night’s roster of musicians; but witnessing the ocean of people inside and outside Kowloon House’s underground bar gave me one thing in mind: that’s the support for the music. Imagine having 350-450 people in attendance. Guido (their keyboardist) even told me all the 400 printed tickets they have during the gathering was totally sold out. Tim (their drummer) noted it exceeded the bar guarantees way more than expected (I suspected that’s somewhere between 300-400%).

While the air conditioning unit was a downisde (taking photos on a low light can be another, but that’s what makes Mow’s bar an intimate place on live music), it can never outnumbered a lot of good stuff that happened during the night.

With that being said, congratulations to MilesExperience for a very successful event. Hope the success will paved an even longer way for you guys in the independent music scene.

Also, shoutouts to the creative director of 9Roots and the man behind Love Supreme and Sikalbo music videos Mr. Jiggy Gregorio. Nice meeting you during the evening.

The Scene Around: Kaleidoscope

12/27/2015 11:45:49 PM

Barely three months ago, after watching Heneral Luna at a mall in Manila, I decided to jump to another coast after seeing a poster containing some of my favorite bands in one night: Jensen and the Flips, The Ransom Collective, Cheats and even Anj Florendo. The event was situated at Mow’s bar, just at the basement of the famed Kowloon House branch at Matalino Street, Quezon City.

All for the weekend before Tagaytay Art Beat. But this one isn’t organized by any of the production groups I know. Certainly I have no idea who in the world is organizer. Heck, I wasn’t even aware it’s her then-birthday party, too. So it looked like I’m a heck-of-a-gatecrasher who shied away from the celebration and charity matters; and instead only wanting to listen to these awesome bands.

Man, it was also the first time I heard Anj on a literally soloflight and the band called Kombo Kombo. Not bad. Other musicians followed suit during that crazy night; and making Kaleidoscope the highest grossing gig at the bar.

Playback: Assembly Generals (ALBUM)

1/10/2016 2:48:03 PM

When my friend Ian of Vandals on the Wall once said 2015 was the year of the Philippine hip-hop, I won’t be surprised at all. And I’m not talking about who won FlipTop Isabuhay tournament here or how many chicks were added on Abra’s fans club.

Look: collaborations may have been increasing as well as the number of quality tracks released (those you would like to hear more often than those jeepney-appropriate “reeeeemixxxx!” songs). But moreover, a lot of albums were also out in the circulation, though not having much slots on your favorite record bars.

Besides, there’s Curtissmith, Ninno, BLKD, and even Zaito who just made waves through their songs; be it on physical records or through the likes of Spotify and Soundcloud.

Take the Assembly Generals for example. This aren’t just a crossover collab effort from Team Manila, Flying Ipis, Miscellaneous and andwich/Squid9/Pedicab. These four peeps may sound much better and livelier at their gigs; but hearing their album is worth the price.

The Php400-value Assembly Generals debut record comes with a embroided package and eight of the dopest tracks you will hear on the other side of hip-hop.

Kontrabida is an obvious favorite with a timely political and societal arguments inserted on the lyrics. But AG had more in store; tackling various talks with other notable hiphop heads collaborating with them like Skarm, and Dash.

Overall, if you’re a legit (and more legit) hip-hop head (not just those who likes digging to those “galawang breezy” tracks), Assembly Generals will get you geared up for action.May not be the very best record for the genre for 2015, but certainly part of the list.

Verdict: 8.5
